Composta dai coniugi Barry Mann e Cynthia Weil, portata al successo nel 1965 dagli Animals (già citati di striscio nel post per Tobacco Road), suonata nel corso degli anni da uno stuolo di artisti, tra i quali Bruce Springsteen, i Blue Oyster Cult, gli Angelic Upstarts, i Grand Funk Railroad ed Alice Cooper, è la canzone che meglio incarnò lo stato d'animo dei soldati americani spediti a combattere la Guerra del Vietnam.

Tanto è vero che alcuni anni fa un'associazione di reduci della "sporca guerra" l'ha eletta inno ufficiale di chi ha combattuto in quel conflitto. Forse per questo suo valore simbolico, la canzone di Mann e Weil fu scelta come motivo conduttore dell'attacco più sanguinoso del film Hamburger Hill - Collina 937 (1987) di John Irvin, opera che, pur entro i suoi limiti artistici, costituisce una lapide di monito sull'assoluta ed indifendibile inutilità dei massacri bellici.
