La stagione della strega (1972)

In originale questo film s'intitolava Hungry Wives ("Mogli affamate"), titolo che poteva essere equivocato con quello, se non di un porno, di un film comunque per adulti. Infatti, il terzo lungometraggio di George A. Romero era stato rititolato anche come Jack's Wife ("La moglie di Jack"): ed in effetti la protagonista, Joan, è sposata con un uomo brutale che pensa solo al lavoro, la lascia sola ed occasionalmente la mena pure. Ed ecco che la signora si trasforma in una strega e, casualmente o meno, alla fine avrà la propria vendetta sul disgraziato coniuge. Nella colonna sonora c'è il pezzo che ha fornito il titolo italiano del film, una lunga canzone bluesata e psichedelica composta da Donovan (al secolo Donovan Leitch) e che, nel corso degli anni, ha avuto innumerevoli versioni, una più bella dell'altra.

Se nel film di Romero si può ascoltare la versione originale (di cui più sotto riproduco il testo), la mia preferita è quella di Al Kooper, Steven Stills e Mike Bloomfield, a suo tempo editata nell'album Super Session¹ (1968).

¹ In realtà le parti di chitarra di questa versione di Season Of The Witch sono affidate al solo Stills, mentre Bloomfield aveva suonato lo stesso strumento sulle tracce che componevano originariamente il lato B del disco in vinile.
